Terms of Service
Last updated: August 2026
PROVISIONAL - This is a provisional draft of the Terms of Service. It is provided for information only and may be replaced by a final version.
Acceptance of these terms
By creating an account or otherwise using the Hibiki Voice mobile application or hibikivoice.com (the "Service"), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
The Service
Hibiki Voice provides daily targeted Japanese pronunciation lessons. Each lesson asks you to listen to a native speaker and repeat out loud, then gives you instant mora-level feedback, a pitch-accent pattern, and a Perfect / Good / Try Again tier.
The Service also includes a Japanese dictionary lookup powered by a bundled JMdict database.
Accounts
You provide an accurate email address and are responsible for activity on your account. Authentication is handled by better-auth with HTTP-only session cookies.
Subscriptions
We offer one auto-renewable subscription, "Usagi-chan's Friend" (product id paid0, USD 9.99/month), that unlocks all paid-0 lessons. Billing is handled by Apple App Store / StoreKit.
The subscription auto-renews unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage or cancel from the platform subscription management UI or via the "Manage Subscription" button in the Settings screen.
Each purchase is verified server-side using the Apple App Store Server API, and your account tier is derived from the live subscription state.
In-app purchases are not available on the web; the web paywall directs you to the iOS app to subscribe.
Quota and fair use
To protect assessment cost margins, each tier has a monthly pronunciation-assessment quota enforced server-side. When you exceed your quota, the Service returns an error and shows your reset date.
Unauthenticated onboarding users receive a smaller per-device trial quota of six calls per month. A stable anonymous device id is used to track this quota.
Acceptable use
You agree not to abuse, automate, scrape, or reverse-engineer the Service, the Speechsuper or OpenAI assessment pipelines, or the Google Text-to-Speech synthesis route.
You may not attempt to evade quotas, share accounts to pool quota, or submit audio that is not a genuine attempt at the reference word in order to manipulate scoring.
Pronunciation feedback accuracy
Feedback is generated by third-party AI providers (Speechsuper and OpenAI) and may be inaccurate. Scores, mora alignments, and tier labels are guidance for practice, not a certification. The Service is not a substitute for a qualified Japanese-language teacher.
Intellectual property
We own the Service, the lessons, the Usagi-chan character, and related content. These terms do not grant you any right to redistribute or resell that content.
Termination
You may delete your account or stop using the Service at any time. We may suspend or terminate access for abuse of the Service or breach of these terms.
Disclaimer and limitation of liability
The Service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind. To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service.
Changes to these terms
We may update these Terms of Service from time to time. Material changes will be posted here with an updated "Last updated" date.
